Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some of the questions people often ask before starting counselling.

What happens at the first session?

An initial session provides the opportunity to consider if counselling might be of benefit to you. It is a chance to talk about what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions, and decide whether you would like to continue.

How long does a session last?

Sessions usually last between 50-60 minutes.

How often will we meet?

If you decide to continue, usually it is agreed to meet for a number of sessions on a weekly or sometimes fortnightly basis.

How many sessions will I need?

Some people come for just a few sessions: others come over a longer period of time. The number of sessions is agreed with you and can be reviewed as counselling progresses.

Are evening appointments available?

Yes. Daytime and evening appointments are available.

Is counselling confidential?

Counselling takes place within the safety of a professional, therapeutic relationship based on confidentiality, trust and respect. There are some limited circumstances where confidentiality may need to be broken, for example if there is a serious risk of harm to you or others. Your counsellor will explain these at your first session.

What kinds of issues can counselling help with?

Each person will have their own individual concerns. Some examples of issues people bring to counselling include relationship difficulties, stress and anxiety, depression, bereavement, loss and change, work issues and self esteem. See Counselling for more.

Are your counsellors qualified?

Yes. Michaela Sinclair is an Accredited and Registered Member of BACP, and Diana Taylor is a Senior Accredited and Registered Member of BACP. We adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

How much does counselling cost?

Please contact us for current fees.

Can my employer arrange counselling for me?

We provide counselling and supervision for organisations, including through Employee Assistance Programmes. See Organisational Services.
